We have reached the end of another year and people are preparing to begin anew. On the morrow, resolutions will be made -- bold declarations of that which we intend to change. But in the words of Whitney Young, legendary civil rights leader and former Executive Director of the National Urban League:
“The danger is that people may mistake what is basically a change of vocabulary for a change in behavior, practices, and attitudes.”
Repentance, then, is first acknowledging that you are a sinner. We have not just done something wrong, but there are things about us that are wrong which cause us to do such things. Once that acknowledgement is made, we must ask God to forgive us. Only God can forgive us, and He expressed His willingness to forgive, when He gave His son, Jesus, for us. (John 3:16 / 1 John 3:16) Finally, we must be willing to change.
